Recipe: Spring Green Smoothie

With the weather warming up, it’s the perfect time to start incorporating smoothies and cold foods back into your diet!

This particular recipe is super simple and a great one for Spring because it includes one of my all-time favourite herbs - stinging nettle. Nettle is a traditional “Spring tonic”, meaning it has traditionally been used as a cleanser and tonic for this time of year. Nettle is one of the richest plant sources of minerals and has high levels of magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc. What a powerhouse! As well as being a good addition to a green smoothie, stinging nettle leaf is also a delicious tea - i like to add it to a blend with chamomile and rose.

Note: make sure you are using nettle leaf, not nettle root! Both are medicinal but have different properties and uses.

Ingredients

1 banana

1/2 avocado

1 serve protein powder of choice - i like to use a plain whole hemp powder or whey protein

1/2 grated frozen zucchini

1 handful baby spinach or other green leafy veg

2 heaped teaspoons dried nettle leaf

Water or milk of choice

Ice cubes

Directions

Add all ingredients to a high-powered blender and mix until smooth. Enjoy!
