Flower Essences for Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a time of huge emotional upheaval, and is certainly a time of transitions, physically and energetically. Flower essences can be a great way to support your emotional wellness through this period of change and growth, and help you to find your footing as you journey from maiden to mother. Below are some of my top picks for flower essences in pregnancy, as well as some ideas for how to use flower essence remedies during pregnancy.

Cerato

Cerato is the remedy for those who are having trouble following their intuition. Pregnancy is certainly a time where this issue can arise, especially if you are pregnant for the first time. There are so many choices to be made in this time and it can be hard to understand what you’re choosing and why, let alone make the choices that are right for you, without bowing to external pressures. Remember that it is your family that you must think of now, the choices your great aunt made many years ago won’t necessarily be what’s best for you. Cerato can help you to connect to your intuition and hear your inner wisdom.

Elm

Elm is the remedy for those who are feeling overwhelmed. Whether its being overcome by the responsibilities that face you as a mother, or the overwhelm of coping with the rapid physical, energetic, emotional, and even interpersonal changes that occur during this time, elm is the remedy to use here. Elm can help to restore your strength of mind and give you the ability to cope with your situation.

Mimulus

Mimulus is a fear remedy, particulalry for those who have fear of known things, such as pain. It is an ideal remedy for those who are feeling worried or anxious about pregnancy or birth, including worrying about the pain of labour and childbirth. Mimulus can help to relieve these fears and anxieties, allowing you to be calm and centred.

Olive

Olive is the remedy for exhaustion. It is ideal for those who feel exhausted in both their body and mind from the physical demands of pregnancy - it’s not easy growing a person! If pregnancy has left you feeling bone-tired and unable to get through the day, olive might be a useful remedy for you. Olive can help you to rebuild you strength and restore your vitality. Remember, too, that extra rest is needed during pregnancy, and it’s okay to prioritise rest when you need it.

Pine

Pine is the remedy for guilt, shame and self-blame. In pregnancy, these feelings can easily creep in. Whether it’s guilt about your health or medical care choices, or feelings of shame for not being “good enough” in one way or another, pine is the remedy to use. Pine will help to release feelings of guilt and shame, and help you to restore a sense of self worth within yourself.

Walnut

Just as the walnut is so safely entombed within its shell, the walnut flower essence remedy is ideal for all situations where energetic protection might be needed. It is also the ideal remedy for periods of great change, such as during pregnancy. Walnut helps to protect you emotionally and energetically, keeping you grounded and supporting you as you adapt to life changes and establish new routines.

Using Flower Essences During Pregnancy

As energetic medicines, flower essences are a wonderful and safe therapeutic to use during pregnancy. Flower essences do typically contain brandy (alcohol) as a preservative, but the dose used for a flower essence is very small (just 2 drops!), so the amount of alcohol consumed is minimal. However, if you would prefer not to consume even small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy, flower essences can be administered in other ways, such as:

  • Add 2-4 drops to a warm (not hot) bath and soak yourself. You may wish to add Epsom salts or even dried flowers and herbs for some extra healing goodness

  • Apply your usual dose of 2 drops to your inner wrists, rather than taking the dose orally

  • Add 2-4 drops to coconut oil or another body safe oil and use as a moisturiser

  • Add 2-4 drops to a room spray of your choice - be sure any essential oils in your room spray are safe to use during pregnancy
